Fraunhofer Competence Center Battery Cell Production

Battery cell research and production for the American market

The Fraunhofer Competence Center for Battery Cell Production is an initiative of research institutions of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft that are advancing battery production in an international environment. The center offers North American companies a central point of contact for industrial and research projects relating to battery cell production. This includes market and strategic concepts as well as the testing of process technologies and the construction of production machines and systems.

Production technology expertise from Aachen and Münster

The Competence Center is run jointly by the Fraunhofer Research Fab Battery Cell FFB in Münster and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen.

With 170 experts, Fraunhofer FFB acts as an idea factory for research and development into advanced battery systems. The institute's research infrastructure is currently being expanded to achieve production capacities of up to 7 GWh per year. The infrastructure is to be continuously developed and expanded until 2030 in order to validate new product and process innovations in a production environment together with companies.

Complementing Fraunhofer FFB, we at Fraunhofer IPT contribute our many years of experience in the design and construction of pilot line systems: IPT has recently developed a pilot system for the production of solid-state batteries.

Orientation

The battery market is subject to rapid changes that are often difficult to predict. This requires fast and reliable strategic decisions. We work with you to develop practicable and sustainable strategies for market entry.

Industrialization

Scaling is the most important hurdle in the transition from research and development to series production. We support you in setting up new production facilities and optimize your manufacturing processes for a smooth and efficient transition to large-scale production.

Operation

After commissioning, processes need to be further optimized and the often high reject rates need to be reduced. Our aim is to use process data and digitalization to improve the company's operations.
