The laser beam as a tool: versatile and resource-saving

Where conventional manufacturing technologies reach their performance limits, the strength of the laser beam tool becomes apparent: The laser works almost wear-free, can be precisely controlled and can be individually adapted to numerous processes and materials.

For more than 30 years, Fraunhofer IPT has been working with various laser technologies in many fields of production application. In close cooperation with industry, we design laser modules for manufacturing systems and tools, conceive hybrid manufacturing processes with laser support, develop measurement methods using lasers or for controlling laser processing, and embed additive manufacturing processes efficiently and resource-efficiently into new or existing process chains.

For all processing tasks, we not only look at the respective individual process step or the individual technologies used, but also take a close look at the entire process chain: What special requirements do systems, tools, components and end product have to fulfill and how can the laser support here?

We achieve complex components, functional surfaces, clean cut edges or high degrees of forming by using lasers. Our goal is to achieve high component quality for a wide range of variants with the greatest possible automation – from one-offs to series production.

The areas of application at a glance

In many industrial sectors and for numerous consumer goods, lightweight construction serves to save energy and raw materials. Automated machining and processing methods make it possible to manufacture products from fiber-reinforced plastic in large quantities. Fraunhofer IPT is developing production-ready manufacturing processes that will help make the benefits of these materials accessible to a large number of people.
